Bollywood’s anti-corruption protest

Bollywood may be tweeting its support to Anna Hazare non-stop, but only a handful of its celebrities — music composer Vishal Dadlani, actors Anupam Kher, Raghu Ram and Purab Kohli — turned up for the anti-corruption protests in Mumbai’s Azad Maidan on Tuesday. The rest are drawing flak for their poor show of real solidarity.

“Celebrities need to come out, experience the activities at ground zero and get their hands dirty by becoming a part of the change. Celebs have a mass appeal and they get heard, so if they had participated in the movement, it would have gone to another level,” says Raghu Ram. Those who tweeted support but did not turn up for the protests include filmmakers Shekhar Kapur and Kunal Kohli, actors Ranvir Shorey, Neha Dhupia and R Madhavan, among others. “whr r our bollywood heroes?? Do they not want to support the real-life thrill??? Join in real life action,” tweeted Nimisha45. “Actors can only tweet their fake support, but they are nowhere to see when they were needed,” said minkspeaks. “They are only tweeting from ac homes and the common man is really protesting,” wrote Shaan20.

Purab Kohli, however, defends the fraternity, saying, “Celebs are public figures so their presence is bound to divert attention from the real cause, as fans mob them. So virtual or real, their support should be appreciated.”
